The largest conference and expo on green innovation, West Coast Green, just started off yesterday and we already have the scoop with a great house dedicated to those who really care about the envinronment (I’m one of them, you?). It’s the SG Blocks Container House designed by the Lawrence Group that was built up usng five recycled shipping containers, uses solar power and can recycle rainwater.

Other than all these it also uses an Agilewaves resource monitoring system which is a web-based application that actively monitors real-time electric, gas and water usage and then calculates the carbon footprint. But the SG Blocks container house is not only highly sustainable but can also withstand hurricanes in Florida and earthquakes in California, thanks to its durable steel envelope. Just for the record … it took them 1 month to do the prefab and only 4 hours and 47 minutes to install it at the expo. – via Inhabitat

Living in the suburbs is not what it used to be. There are all sorts of amenities, utilities and such, but more to it, there are stunning examples of modern architecture. Take that cutting-edge modernist style house in Brisbane’s suburbs (83 Hampstead Road Highgate Hill), Australia, that will likely get you a “wow” with its angular forms, fluid curves and flowing lines. But the exterior is just foreplay to what’s inside …

The 4,617-sq.-ft. multi-level residence, combines art and architecture, glass, steel and stone packs close to perfection. The elegant wooden staircase makes the connection between the living space and the four bedrooms. Simple but sophisticated at the same time, the most impressive of them all is the master bedroom that overlooks the entertaining area outside (with a beautiful blue pool) and the breathtaking city skyline. To those that can afford it, the house will be auctioned on October 30.

For all the readers that are looking to buy a beautiful home and have $10 million AUD in their bank accounts or can get a loan for that, I advise you to take a look at the Walker House, in Sydeney, Australia. In an exclusive and tranquil neighborhood located at 20 Lentara Rd, Bayview Heights, the $9.7 million USD (or €6.1 million) house packs 4 extremely modern bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 3 garages and one lovely inground pool.

What got my attention? The modern architecture, the vast ceiling spaces and the huge outdoor sliding glass that makes it look like a part of nature, plus the fact that it uses underfloor heating. Oh did I mention the 8 person outdoor spa? Guess not.

If these things aren’t enough for that money, then here comes the cavalry: a championship lawn tennis court, cinema, smart home technology, more than 1 acre of manicured grounds, reverse cycle air conditioning, split-faced travertine and lots of terraces and recreation spaces.

It’s a dream home. I wish it would be mine … Don’t you?

When I first saw this building I’ve said to myself : “This house has a really interesting structure and exterior.”, and after that I’ve found out that this house is the Ljubljana – Dutch Embassy Residence. The concept of the building is derived from the specific needs of an ambassador. The ground floor is intended for receptions and office work, while all the private rooms are located on the first floor.

The different contents are reflected by the facade where the ground floor opens onto the garden, while the first floor, clad with wood, is more introverted. The ground floor hosts a study, a living room, a lounge and a dining room, all of which are linked into one surface by means of doors, reminding us of the Dutch tradition. The upper wooden volume is uneven in height. This project was built in 2002-2003 by a team of architects (Matija Bevk, Vasa Perović, Blaž Kandus ) and you can find more info about this project from here.

We’ve seen it in movies and in real life, that writers need a quiet place to come up with great ideas for their books. If you’ve been looking for the key elements for such a house, then we have Casa Kike located in Cahuita, Costa Rica (30 miles south of Puerto Limon).

Gianni Botsford from GB Architects used indigenous techniques and materials to build this modern looking house, for his father. The whole pavilion is built on a wooden structure with no vertical walls on the interior and consists of a main studio space, with a contemporary library, a writing desk and a grand piano. But Botsford doubled everything, because just a short distance along a raised walkway there’s another pavilion with the sleeping quarters and a bathroom.

It blends really well with the whole “neighborhood” and I’ll be honest I’d like to have a vacation home like Casa Kike. – via Cubeme
