England-based AR Design Studio Architects constantly surprise us with their modern extensions; you may remember The Glass House or The Runners Project, both featured on Freshome a while back. Today, we offer a glimpse of Richmond House, the architects’ latest project.

Following local regulations, AR Design Studio merged old and new into a contemporary dream home. Originally built in a neo-Georgian style, the house in London was upgraded by adding a generously sized modern extension that opens up to the backyard.

“A single-story extension at the rear of the house provides a large open‐plan kitchen, dining and living space,” the architects said. “This creates a light and airy space for the owners and gives Dylan, the dog, plenty of space to run around. The external façade is clad in tessellated fiber-cement cladding and sets a contemporary geometry.”

The main living area is connected to the bedrooms on the second level by a steel and timber stairway with glass-panel railings. What do you think of the modern extension on this home? [Photos by Martin Gardner]
