Once an architectural building has surpassed its original purpose, some bright minds repurpose it into exceptional interiors. This is the case of SoHo’s 1905 Beaux Arts Police Headquarters Building, which has been transformed into a unique and outstanding residence. Evaluated at $14,500,000, the Gymnasium Apartment is the only interior completely renovated by world renowned and acclaimed architect Charles Gwathmey. His valued creativity constructed a majestic private residence that would accentuate the building’s historic landmark significance. The 6,000 square foot apartment features four bedrooms with en-suite and a half bathroom. As described by the architect: “The intention was to physically maintain and visually exploit the volumetric integrity and structural expression of the existing barrel vaulted space, while adding a master bedroom suite and study/library balcony, and integrating an eclectic painting and sculpture collection.” We have only the architect and history to thank for such a successfully repurposed building.
