Have you ever needed just one more drawer, or a little more space to store a few things, without buying a new piece of furniture ? If your answer is yes, then West Elm has an interesting idea that could solve this problem …. their new floating media drawer — a stackable, single drawer that complements their various media stands and end tables. Designed to be additional storage for DVDs or various remote controls, we can imagine using an extra drawer for everything from socks to silverware. The price for this floating media drawer is $129.00.

Future Architecture : Floating Ecopolis for Climate Refugees

According to the less alarming forecasts of the GIEC (Intergovernmental group on the evolution of the climate), the ocean level should rise from 20 to 90 cm during the 21st Century with a status quo by 50 cm (versus 10 cm in the 20th Century). As a solution to this alarming problem architect Vincent Callebaut came up with this ecotectural marvel that could serve as a luxurious future retreat for 50,000 inhabitants seeking refuge from rising waters due to global warming. He believes the world will be desperately seeking shelter from the devastations of climate change, and hopes the auto-sufficient amphibious city will serve as a luxurious solution. To bad that right now we are close to 7 billion people and this luxurious future retreat is just for 50,000 inhabitants ( just for rich people ).

Vincent Callebaut called this project “Lilypad“, but this ecotectural marvel is also called as “Floating Ecopolis for Climate Refugees”. The whole structure is covered in green walls and roofs, the top portion covered in grasses with the inner portion featuring a palm oasis, and the under portion serving as a bed for natural sea planktons and oceanic plants. Finally if you were already planning to reserve a place to this luxurious future retreat stay calm, because Vincent Callebaut hopes that “Floating Ecopolis for Climate Refugees” will make the transition from design to reality around the year 2100.

AZ Island, A Floating World Concept

I’m used to see all kind of futuristic projects on the web, but this one is really something outrageous. This titanic project for a high-tech, artificial island capable of movement was thought up by architect Jean-Philippe Zopponi. I don’t expect to see this project to soon, but if the AZ Island eventually sees the light of day, it will measure 400 metres long by 300 metres wide and be able to welcome up to 10,000 passengers. The ovoid island’s shape and size – 29 floors high and a surface area equivalent to 4 football fields – will necessarily limit its speed (4 times slower than a cruise ship). Obviously, the island will be too large to berth. A boat or helicopter will therefore be needed to access its cabin; for this reason, a landing pad and marina have been planned. AZ Island should also be able to withstand 20-metre-high waves, as well as hurricanes. I don’t even want to imagine how something like this will be managed, is something just to much for my imagination. Via: Thebuilderblog.wordpress & mv.lycaeum.org

Nirvana Chair

The Nirvana Chair is far more than a simple sculptural statement, is a piece of steel furniture that follow the natural shape of the reclining body. The presence of this piece of furniture in any room will change the mood and embellish it with a strong sense of sophistication and style. The concept of form creating function becomes apparent when one is seated: this is an experience blending the impression of security with freedom. The chair’s contours hold the body snugly whilst allowing a feeling of weightlessness to develop with its gentle motion. An alternative to the stand is suspension from a suitable ceiling joist, which creates the surreal effect of floating in mid air.

Floating Drawer Bed

The Floating Drawer Bed is project made by Scott Sykor and he made this project because he wanted to design and build a simple bed frame which would allow him to conserve space in his room. The outer frame is made from 1×3 boards of maple and the drawer box is constructed using furniture grade plywood. The outer frame comes apart for easy transportation and the drawer set solved all my clothing storage needs. The most interesting part of this project is the illusion of the drawer set suspended in midair, a really cool effect that can draw a lot of attention. – Via – Yankodesign
