Modular carpet tiles are the way to go for a beautiful yet customizable focal area for your living space. New from Flor.com are these drop dead gorgeous designs by Alexander Girard, the renowned textile designer. His La Fonda del Sol celebrates folk art designs like you’ve never seen before – whimsical sun shapes in must-have colours to warm up any neutral decor. The most useful feature of modular carpet tiles is the ability to add more than one set for total design flexibility. Mix and match from their different design offerings. There are three main colour selections – the Verde, Mandarina and Azul. If the larger designs aren’t your cup of tea, then try the smaller scale Pequeno which has nine sun graphics in one tile. Like the other tiles, the Pequeno tiles can be built up to cover larger surfaces.

All the tiles come as sets of six for an affordable $160 per set. The tiles are soft as the designs are printed on closely cropped velvet. They are thus easy to clean. A damp cloth will suffice for most surface spills but being modular means you can pick up any soiled tile for washing in the sink! So they are definitely suitable for kitchen or eating areas. Via

On Freshome I focus mostly on things for homes, but today I’ve found an interesting project that I can say is the largest public living-room, and a great place to visit if you are in Switzerland. City Lounge is an outdoor space in the center of St. Gallen, Switzerland, that has been designed by Carlos Martinez in collaboration with Pipilotti Rist and it was the winning entry at a design competition announced by the Schweizer Verbandes der Raiffeisenbanken (SVRB) and the city of St. Gallen. The project features a bright red surfacing that appears to have swept in like the tide, covering everything in its path. At night, the streets are illuminated by blimp-shaped objects that hang from cables strung between the district’s modern office buildings. Photos by : Thomas Mayer - Via

Designed by two students ( Leona Dean and Zoe Robson ) at London South Bank University, Footlume is a new electroluminescent carpet that emits a soft glow as you step across it. The Footlume makes use of rechargeable batteries which power the lights of the rug in relation to the weight of the person walking on it. The rug produces light through electroluminescence which uses electric fields to determine the light-producing chemical to emit electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectrum. Finnaly the Footlume is expected to be presented this month at the Daily Mail Ideal Home Show in London. - Via - Livescience

This sofa that looks like a rug is a great design, and I don’t know how nobody thought at this until now. This design is called East meet West and is designed by Tonio de Roover. The idea behind this “carpet sofa” how I like to call it is pretty simple, a wood and inox support and on top a persian rug. At a first glance the design looks awesome, but I don’t think you could sleep to well on this sofa. - Via - Maad

Studio Laurens van Wieringen created this beautiful landscape carpet. The Carpet is constructed from many little ‘foam-bars’ in different colours and heights. Together these ‘foam-bars’ show an image of a landscape in color and a relief in height. The final result look very interesting, and I’m sure that walking on such a carpet would be a very pleasant experience. - Via - BoingBoing
