The team at LAAB Architects took on the challenge of converting a warehouse in an industrial high-rise in Hong Kong into creative office space for the employees of 9GAG, an online platform for humorous user-generated content.

“Inspired by 9GAG’s web and app interface, LAAB designed a minimalist black and white interior juxtaposing against the raw industrial shell that was preserved as artifact and curiosity for the past,” the architects said. “Transparency, sharing and the sense of community were the keywords for the design strategy.”

The floor, covering more than 5,000 square feet, was divided into three unconventional office areas: 9PARK, 9DESKS and 9SHEDS. The first is a large open space reserved for meetings, lounging, camping and dog walking. Floor pillows are spread throughout the area; along with a ping-pong table, they add to the laid-back feel.

As the name suggests, 9DESKS features large island desks and adjustable sit-stand stations, which serve different project needs. The third area, 9SHEDS, consists of several enclosed meeting rooms along the edge of the desk area. Creative spaces for creative people.
