5 elegant ways to add warmth to your home

Share |

The modern trend when it comes to building homes and designing interiors is to opt for a futuristic, spade age-styled minimalist look that borrows from plenty of whites, grays and blacks. The look is often robotic resulting in homes that are great to look at and visit, but bland and lifeless to live in. It’s like your home lacks a personality and face of its own.

warm house interior 5 elegant ways to add warmth to your homeWithout that unique identity, that personal touch and the exclusive warmth that makes you feel that you belong here; it is really hard to call it your ‘own’. Adding warmth to a place is not as difficult though as many make it out to be.

These simple steps will help you turn the stylish house into your comfortable home!

Add a fireplace to create a more ambient atmosphere

Instead of opting for the modern fireplaces that use plastic materials and a combustible gas for fuel, go traditional with your fireplace mantle. This gives the home a personal look and a timeless charm. A wooden fireplace mantle is a classic that turns out to be a winner on every occasion. But in case your home uses plenty of glass, then a stone mantle styled elegantly is also an excellent choice. This instantly adds warmth to your home in more than just one way, you know …

Pick vibrant colors, shades and textures

Instead of sticking to what is on offer go with the warmer shades like variations of red, orange and yellow. Also if you love the blue sky, the gentle green or even the cute pink, then go for it. Of course, make sure that this is a gentle transformation and not a glaring oddity. Then you can change the textures by choosing patterns that are bold, yet acceptable. This will add immensely to the coziness of your home and it will also give you an excellent opportunity to get creative.

A great book collection, wonderful arrangement of candles or an excellent sue of indoor potted plants and shrubs instantly makes the place a lot friendlier and warm. You can always improvise on this by adding stuff that you like, making your own collection of items and adding more life to the walls. Wicker baskets that hold stuff are also a favorite among people when it comes to creating an affectionate atmosphere.

Use of personal items, collectibles and photographs

There is obviously nothing that offers a home its unique flavor like personal items beautifully arranged. You still have those special photographs that share your great times with your guests? They do bring back some wonderful memories. Both items also tend to become great conversation pieces and if you happen to have a rare or exclusive collectible, then that only adds to the fun.

Rule of thumb: materials such as velvet and wool always help make your home a lot cozier and give it a very warm look. Using a retro-styled lamp shade, curtains made out of Felicia or Terracotta and you’re only adding to the affect. Just mix and match them wisely with the existing interiors and they are sure to work their magic.

No matter how great your home looks, it is important to give it that snuggly and inviting look to ensure that both you and those who visit you once in a while are comfortable and do not feel out of place. It is not a difficult task and once you get started, you will find new ways of making the four walls around you become a natural extension of your thoughts, feelings and emotions!

Patio perfect: How to choose the right furniture for your patio

Share |

Patio is more than a mere extension of your home. If done and designed just right it turns into your own personal comfort zone and a relaxation spa in your very own house.

Modern patios are often extravagant and over indulgent forcing many to believe that a good look patio comes at a heavy price tag. That surely is not the case if you plan to perfection. Sitting under the umbrella and basking in the first warm rays of summer to melt away all that winter lethargy while sipping on a glass of martini is a treat that your patio holds for you.

Chose according to the space available and the existing pattern of the home

Like decorating every other space that resides inside your home, the furniture for your patio is also governed by the available space. The open patio still contains limited floor space and it is important that you preserve the openness of the space while decorating it appropriately. Do not over-crowd your patio. Also remember that it is indeed a part of the home and hence you can either continue to follow the theme of the home or you can go for an extravagant outdoor theme.

Keep in mid the local weather and wind conditions

While your interior furniture is always sufficiently protected from the harsh weather on the outside, the same cannot be said for the furnishings in your patio. If you happen to live in a windy area, pick heavier furniture. Otherwise stylish plastic furniture is a good option for calmer places. Take the local rainfall or even snowfall patterns into consideration before you pick the right material for your patio furniture.

Set a common pattern for your patio and build upon a theme that you have already envisioned. Different materials create different moods. A newly wed couples or those who have just moved in to live together can pick Wicker, which creates a romantic effect. You can use wrought iron and metal for a more Victorian and retro feel. Bamboo is also starting to become a popular option for patio furniture as it exudes a natural look and presents a very durable option. Also use shades that go well with the chosen theme.

Chose wisely when it comes to picking the material for furniture and take proper care

If you wish to pick wooden furniture for your patio, then make sure that you have the patience and time to care for it. Wood looks great, but being a natural material will be subject to the wear and tear of time and elements. Concrete is a safe long term option, while aluminum and plastic are the modern choices that give a contemporary and minimalist look.

Pick the right combination of swings, tables, lounges and chairs

Think about how many chairs you wish to put up in your lounge before picking a center table of the right size. You can also improvise using swings and lounges, but make sure that your choice matches with the utility of the patio. It all depends on whether you wish to host lots of parties, make it a silent romantic retreat of a playhouse for children. Patio furniture can be specific for each need.

Go solar if possible and spice it up with a barbecue grill

Lighting up your patio with solar lights is both cool, hassle-free and something that will save you loads of cash in terms of bills, wiring and other nuisances. There are many awesome solar lighting options available that will go perfectly well with every occasion. Also put up a barbeque grill if you wish to spice it up a tad bit!

A patio is one place in your home which allows you to create your own retreat away from all the troubles of daily life. It also gives you a great opportunity to create and expand your home. So, next time you are planning to decorate your patio, plan carefully before hitting the stores!

home garden How to Take Better Care of a GardenA house is only as good as its foundation and a house’s garden is only as good as the soil in which it is planted. If you keep the soil healthy then the flowers and plants that spring from the soil will also be healthy. That is why it is always important to add proper water and nutrients to the soil. Some Advice on Selecting Furniture for Your Home

Share |

Selecting furniture is a little tricky for some. They may know they need some new items but are unsure as to what type of furniture to add to their residence. Thankfully, the variety of furniture available is so vast that no one will ever run out of options. However, making the actual selection can be difficult.  So, let’s look at a few tips and tricks regarding how to select the right furniture.

selecting furniture1 Some Advice on Selecting Furniture for Your HomeTry not to go beyond your budget. If you overspend on furniture you may end up with less furniture than what will be needed to make a room look complete. Having a nice reclining chair and sofa is always good. But, if they are the only two items in the room then the environment will hardly look inviting!

Selecting a theme would also be quite helpful. When furniture is placed in a room without any noticeable theme it will probably look ok, but it might miss out on its potential. So, select a theme such as Victorian, modern, western, etc. Then, make a purchasing decision that includes furniture items that match the singular, selected theme.

selecting furniture Some Advice on Selecting Furniture for Your HomeYou can also select certain themes for certain rooms. For example, many people will have a room in the house set aside for work, study, or other pursuits. However, many people will keep such rooms bare. This is unfortunate since they could make these rooms experimental and unique. There are a number of specialty furniture stores that sell Polynesian style furniture, retro-mod style furniture, Asian art inspired furniture, and many other unique styles. Why not take that dull looking room and spice it up with a radical departure from traditional furniture styles?

selecting furniture2 Some Advice on Selecting Furniture for Your HomeNever overlook sticking with “evergreen” furniture either. While it is nice to stay on top of trends, trends have a tendency to run out or steam (and style) eventually. This could leave you without outdated furniture that may need to be replaced. Instead, it would be a little more prudent to stick with furniture that avoids a radical departure from common styles.

Select furniture that coincides with the traffic in your home. In other words, you do not want to select furniture that is over sized for your residence or makes moving around the house difficult.

Remember, it is not enough to purchase furniture. You have to do it smartly as well. When you follow this maxim, you will discover your furniture acquisition experiences more rewarding than you ever thought possible.
