Why pellet stoves are better than a regular wood burning stove

Although it is difficult to talk about design, home renovations and home and garden improvements without thinking about the money and ultimately the economy, many people are not letting the grey economy from keeping them from making some great purchases for their home.

When it comes to heating, though, many home owners find that they are limited in what they can do. For the first point, most homes are run on some form of fossil fuel. This has meant high costs over the last several years with the rising cost of crude oil and it can be very frightening on how high a heating bill can get.

With the rising costs, many home owners are trying to find alternatives when it comes to heating their homes and one of those ways is with the purchase of a fireplace or a fireplace insert. Since most people don’t want the added aggravation of stocking wood or attaching a chimney, they have opted to use pellet stoves.

What makes a pellet stove so much better than a regular wood burning stove are several things.

  1. They can use a variety of fuels: Pellet stoves were designed to use compressed wood chip pellets to heat your space but pellet stove owners have quickly realized that the pellet stoves not only burn pellets efficiently but they also burn corn, wheat husks and other biodegradable waste.
  2. Smaller venting: Many wood burning stoves will require a chimney to be installed in your home but a pellet stove, depending on the model, will only require a 3” hole in an outside wall to provide adequate venting for your pellet stove.

  4. You can purchase freestanding or insert: When it comes to pellet stoves, you have a lot of options. You can purchase freestanding pellet stoves or fireplace inserts to work with an existing fireplace. This leaves you with a lot of options and since the venting is small, you can easily add a pellet stove into your home decor quite easily.
  5. Smaller Carbon Footprint: We are all becoming aware of the term “carbon footprint” and it is beginning to affect the decisions that we make. Generally, pellet stoves produce lower emissions and can leave a smaller footprint than a wood burning stove.

In the end, pellet stoves can provide you with an alternative heat source that can lower the amount that you spend on heating and they can be an attractive addition to any home decor.

The Versatility of the Carpet Tiles

Share |

Over the last few years, I have seen a real move away from carpet. Most people are opting for hardwoods or laminates and carpet is almost becoming a thing of the past, that is except for area rugs that are lovingly placed over a hardwood floor to add color or style to a room or simply to protect those hardwoods in high traffic areas.

carpet tiles The Versatility of the Carpet Tiles

With a resurgence in area rugs, it is not surprising that carpet tiles have become a popular choice for many. If you aren’t sure what a carpet tile is, it is simply a square of carpet that can be placed on the floor with other squares of carpet.

Usually a carpet tile is about 18 inches by 18 inches in size, although you can find them in other sizes if you look hard enough, and you usually buy them in a package that contains several tiles. There is a huge selection to choose from and you can mix and match the tiles to make your own patterns that flatter your space.

One of the best points to the carpet tile is the fact that they are so versatile. You can use them in just about any space and you can really play around with the size and shape of your rug. You can make long rugs for a hallway or a large area rug with little difficulty.

The carpet tiles are designed so well, that you barely notice a seam when you have them arranged and in some patterns, the seams blend in so well that you rarely remember that you used carpet tiles.

Another great point about carpet tiles is that they are excellent to use if you have children. Now when a spill wrecks the corner of the carpet, you don’t have to rearrange your furniture, all you need to do is slide out the tile that was stained and replace it with a leftover tile that you have in the storage closet. It is quick, easy and completely painless to replace a tile, especially if you purchased extra when you bought the tiles.

If you rent a home, then the carpet tile is probably a perfect choice for covering up old rugs or flooring. It is very easy to decorate your space and when you move, all you need to do is pull up the tiles and take them with you. At your new home, you can rearrange the carpet tiles to create a new and beautiful carpet that will fit any new dimension that you choose.

When it comes to carpet tiles, I am a big fan and I think it has more to do with the design and less to do with the carpet. I can really play around with the patterns and create new ones or I can stick with the pattern the manufacturers created.

Carpet tiles have even gone green and you can find several brands of carpet tiles that are made from both natural and recycled fibers. So with something that is so versatile that it will fit any space, why not add them to your home. I’m sure everyone has a space that needs a little extra.

Understanding Fabrics in your Interior Decorating

Share |

One thing that you will always notice about interior decorating is that designers will often play with a variety of fabrics to create the desired look. This could be a simple tablecloth on a large, impressive looking dining table or it could be a throw draped across the couch. Fabrics are generally used to provide a splash of color or texture to the room and you can use fabrics to pull out the decor you are going for or simply to accent it.

When it comes to fabric, there are many selections to choose from and it may be hard to figure out which one works best for you home.  Not only should you think of the fabrics that are covering pillows and windows, to name a few places, but you should also think about the fabric that is covering the furniture.

fabrics interior decor Understanding Fabrics in your Interior DecoratingThe type of fabric that you purchase is very important and it can be the difference of having beautiful lines and a crumpled mess that is filled with holes. Before you choose your fabric, ask yourself some simple questions about the use of the space. Things like:

• What will the space be used for?
• Will it be a high traffic area?
• Will it be used regularly or just when guests come over?
• What type of light does the room have?
• Do you have any pets?
• Do you have any children?

Believe it or not, your answers will deeply affect your fabric choose since you won’t want to use a lot of silk if you have children eating snacks in the room. You also won’t want to place a leather chair in a sunroom. Once you know all the answers, then you can move on to selecting your fabrics.

When it comes to fabrics, there are many different types out there and the combinations are endless but for the purpose of practicality, we are going to look at a 100% fabric and none of the combination fabrics.

Rayon:
Also known to many designers as “art silk,” rayon is a semi-synthetic fabric that is a great alternative to silk. It has a bright shiny texture to it and is a great choice for many homes that is looking for something that is more durable than silk is. The one major drawback of rayon is that it will wrinkle so it is better to use it on a surface that won’t have a lot of people lounging on it.

Silk:
Well, we all know what silk is and it can provide a rich element to any room when you use it for window coverings, pillows or even as an upholstery covering. It has a soft lustre to it and the fibers themselves are actually prism like, which is why the material shines it reflects light at various angles. The main drawback of silk is that it is not very durable. It is prone to wrinkling and it will stain very easily. I would avoid using silk in high traffic areas such as family rooms where people may be munching on popcorn during a movie.

Olefin:
If you want to find a material that is comfortable and functional, then you should choose this synthetic fabric. Olefin is a very common material that is used in furniture since the fabric is durable, holds color and stain resistant. This is the perfect fabric for those high traffic areas and for smaller fabric areas; you can find olefin combined with other fabrics to create beauty and function.

Polyester:
Usually seen in drapes and bed sheets, most people do not use a straight polyester fabric to decorate with, or really at any time. What they do use instead is a polyester blend with a variety of other fabrics. Polyester is a synthetic fibre that is used in a variety of ways and can be found in a large number of textures. It, or a polyester blend, is a good choice for sitting areas since polyester is resistant to wrinkles.

Cotton:
Cotton is a natural fiber that is found in a lot of different blends and fabrics. It is comfortable and breathable, which makes it an excellent fabric to work with. It also has the wonderful traits of being resistant to fading and other signs of wear and tear. The main problem with cotton is that it tends to stain and become soiled very easily. That is why, if you choose to use cotton in your home, you should use a cotton blend instead of a pure cotton.

Acrylic:
Acrylic, also known as Acrylic fiber, is a synthetic fabric that was created as an alternative to wool and it has begun seeing use as an alternative to cashmere. The fabric is surprisingly soft and comfortable and its durability makes it an excellent choice for home decor. Generally, acrylic fabrics hold color extremely well and resist shrinkage, which is excellent when you have to clean some of your fabrics. Acrylic fabric also resists stains and wear and tear. It is also resistant to wrinkles.

Nylon:
Another synthetic fabric, nylon is a resilient fabric that has a silky texture to it. It is usually resistant to stains and it holds color extremely well. Although it is a strong fabric it tends to only be used in blends and not on its own. Since it is a strong and resilient fabric, the uses for nylon, or nylon blends, is practically endless when it comes to your home decor.

Leather:
The last fabric that I am going to look at is leather, which is a natural fabric that is produced by tanning various hides, usually cow but not always. Leather can add a rich element to a home and many people love it but this is not the easiest fabric to have in your home. Leather requires a lot of work and the color can fade if it is placed in direct sunlight. Another problem with leather is that it can become scratched and stained quite easily. Still, it does make a statement wherever you use it and can be an excellent choice for many rooms.

The main thing to remember about fabrics is that you need to pick something that you are comfortable with and ones that fit your lifestyle. You won’t want to use a lot of silks if you have dogs and cats scrambling over them on a daily basis. If you are ever in doubt about a fabric, simply look for an alternative in a fabric blend instead of working with 100% pure fabric.

The Mismatched Dining Room : Tips for creating a well-balanced mismatched style

Share |

Have you ever walked around a furniture store and seen all the tables sitting there perfectly matched and looking almost too perfect? Although a formal and matching dining room set can be breathtaking, it can also be unimaginative and boring. Many people want to add a little zest to their dining space and they often choose to do so with a mismatched dining room.

mismatched dining room The Mismatched Dining Room : Tips for creating a well balanced mismatched style

But how can a mismatched dining room be beautiful? Isn’t that something you do when you first move out on your own? It shouldn’t be something that you plan, should it? While I still remember my very first dining room set, and shudder at the horror of it, a mismatched dining room set can be functional and fashionable if you follow a few simple guidelines for creating your masterpiece. Remember there is a difference between being mismatched and being stylishly mismatched and what you are going for with your dining room is the latter.

Mismatched Tip Number 1: Choose the table first

This tip is actually selective since some people find chairs that they just have to use first but generally, it is better to look for the table first. It is much easier looking for chairs that match the height of the table instead of a table that matches the height of the chairs. Choosing the table first will enable you to gauge what type of chairs you would like and what would look best with the style of table you chose.

Mismatched Tip Number 2: Look for sturdy chairs

One of the biggest complaints that people have about dining room chairs is that they aren’t sturdy. Many times with a dining room chair, you often feel as though you are going to tip over at the slightest lift of your fork. When you are choosing the chairs for your mismatched dining room, make sure that you look for function before style. Trust me, you and your guests will appreciate it and if you can find function and style, all the better.

Mismatched Tip Number 3: It’s all about height

Although you are going with a mismatched set, there is one area that you should match and that is height. Making sure that your chairs are the correct height to your dining room table is the best way to make your mismatched dining room style to work. If the chairs are too short, they will look off, too tall and you won’t be able to sit at the table comfortably.

Mismatched Tip Number 4: Don’t worry if the chairs match

When it comes to mismatched dining room tables, you really don’t need to use a variety of chairs. Instead, find a set of chairs that you purchased without the table. Every chair doesn’t have to be different and sometimes having every chair different can be too much. Keep the chairs the same, but maybe have one or two that are slightly different than the rest to create a symmetrical effect to your mismatched table.

Mismatched Tip Number 5: Try buying used

The last tip that I want to mention is that you shouldn’t worry about purchasing your furniture used. Although new can be wonderful, you can find some wonderful gems when it comes to a table or the chairs when you purchase used. Browse for sale ads, go to estate or furniture auctions and before you know it, you will have a beautiful mismatched set for only a fraction of the cost that you would have spent buying new.

What are the Benefits of a Green Roof for Your Home

Share |

The green movement is in full swing and it has become very popular in home decor. Many home owners find that they can enjoy the luxury of functional fashion while still remaining eco-friendly in their furniture, flooring and everything in between. Among the many items that are going green, roofs have become a great place to start your eco-friendly renovations and there are many benefits for you, your wallet and your neighbors.

green roofs What are the Benefits of a Green Roof for Your HomeBefore I go into what the benefits of a green roof are, I would like to explain what a green roof is first. A green roof is actually a cover for your current roof that uses plants such as grasses and lichens to cover the top of your house. It is actually very in-depth when it comes to making your roof green and the process usually involves water proofing your existent roof, applying a root repellent system and a drainage system so there is little to no damage caused by the plants.

green roof What are the Benefits of a Green Roof for Your HomeAfter that installers will place a filter cloth on your roof, cover it with a growing medium and then finally secure the plants onto your roof. What you are left with is a pretty green garden on the top of your house that is always a conversation starter.

The benefits of a green roof vary and I will look at them individually.

Benefits for you:

No matter how green conscious we are, there will always be a part of our brain that will ask, “Well, how does this benefit me?”. The answer is really that it will benefit your wallet in the long run. Although green roofs can be expensive to install, they are usually make up their investment within a few years.

  • Green roofs form a layer of insulations for the home. This means that home owners will probably use less insulation on their roofs when they build and they will also use less energy to both heat and cool their homes. In fact, studies have shown that a green roof can reduce your cooling costs by 25% during the summer months alone. Those savings are massive when it all starts to add up.
  • The second benefit of the insulation is sound proofing. Now this may not seem like a big benefit but if you are in an area with a lot of air traffic, you will quickly notice the benefit of even partial sound proofing that is provided by a green roof.
  • The third benefit is the aesthetic appeal. Although it may look strange in the beginning, green roofs are usually the talk of the town and everyone loves details that are unique and beautiful.
  • Lastly, a green roof enables you to reduce the number of roof drains that you have and in some cases, it can completely eliminate them. This may not seem like a huge benefit but when it comes time for cleaning those drains, you will be overjoyed with not having to clean any.

americangreenroof What are the Benefits of a Green Roof for Your HomeBenefits for society:

Before I close off on this article, I think that it is important to look at the benefits for society, since this is often the reason why we go green in the first place.

  • Obviously, the fact that you are saving money on your home energy costs is a green benefit for everyone since it will ultimately mean that you are burning fewer crude oils. This means fewer greenhouse gases, which is great for everyone.
  • Another benefit of green roofs is the fact that it affects the “Urban Heat Island Effect.” This means that if an urban area has more green roofs, the actual heat island effect is actually lowered. This results in decreased costs for cities when they try to meet greenhouse gas reductions.
  • Having a green roof creates jobs for more than one industry, since a green roof uses construction, drainage, roofing membranes, substrate and plants. This opens up a world of industry and will create jobs for everyone interested in those industries.
  • Green roofs also have the added benefit of lowering the costs that is needed to handle the effects of storm water. Most green roofs are designed to use storm water and there is very little runoff from a green roof that will fill storm sewers.
  • Lastly, a green roof aids in the manufacturing of clean oxygen. With more and more forests and “green” areas being destroyed, the need for plants to produce oxygen continues to grow. Providing a roof that can produce oxygen is an excellent way to ensure that our planet stays healthy and green for generations to come.

So when all is said and done, there are many different benefits when it comes to a green roof. Not only will it save you money but it is eco-friendly and decorative at the same time.
