Marcello Zuffo, a senior designer with Motorola’s Consumer Experience Design Group, entered the 2008 Electrolux/Interior Design Magazine competition for innovative kitchen design and took the Grand Prize with this design: an ultramodern kitchen with multiple movable components. As required by the competition, Electrolux ICON appliances are incorporated throughout the space while the overall design can be shifted and manipulated to adapt to whatever task is required of the space. The contemporary aesthetic allows for the user to be creative with what would otherwise be a boring, rectangular kitchen floor plan, and encourages an interesting degree of user interactivity between Zuffo’s design and your day-to-day preferences. In fact, you might as well change up the space every few weeks just to try something different. – via

If you’re looking for an exceptionally elegant home dining and entertaining experience, this PING-PONG table designed by Hunn Wai combines smooth, heavy planes with the Rococo ordainments of 18th century neo-classical furniture. Both a stylish dining table and an officially-sized ping-pong table, the long, rectangular blossom-filled vase that divides the center can serve as either a charming table floral arrangement or the net for an especially grandiose game of table tennis. When the dining centerpiece of your home is ordained with gold-lacquered Rococo ornamentation and ping-pong iconography, you should insist on more parties in formal wear. In fact, only visitors in formal wear should ever be allowed to eat or play at your table. Really, it’s an issue of design-consistency. – Via

When the time comes to renovate the kitchen, it is often difficult to find an affordable design that both the husband and wife can agree upon. By nature, they generally have different visions for both style and budget. One particular couple wanted a high-end, stylish and affordable look that they both would enjoy, so they consulted interior designer Eli Mechlovitz from GlassTileStore.com. After consultation, Mechlovitz suggested they decorate with dark-shaded glass tile and mosaics, one of the hottest trends in the interior design industry.

For those unfamiliar with the glass tile trend, it can be described as a more stylish, luxurious decorating option as compared to ceramic tiles. One of the greatest characteristics in glass tile is the uniqueness – it is available in a wide range of colors, textures, shapes, blends and designs. Attempting to meet both their style needs, Mechlovitz recommended brown glass tile, specifically Zen Espresso, an affordable option from GlassTileStore. The earthy brown blend of Zen Espresso would create a modern and chic space in this kitchen, one masculine and traditional enough for the husband, and one eclectic, trendy and unique enough for the wife.

After installation, the dark glass tile, surrounded by the airy light cabinetry, provided a warm and luxurious feel for the kitchen. The different shades of brown transformed the previously dull kitchen, and offered an aesthetically pleasing pattern that perfectly united the upper white cabinetry with the lower dark cabinetry. The couple never realized there was a style that could accommodate both their needs so well. Extremely pleased with the results, they asked Mechlovitz back later this month, this time for consultation on their bathroom.

If you are looking for a cool design for your kitchen you might want to see a kitchen that just won an award, the “Good Design Award“, the prestigious award of the Design Athenaeum of Chicago. The design has been awarded to Snaidero for Kube, the latest innovative kitchen by Offredi Design, presented by the company at Eurocucina 2008. The Kube kitchen by Snaidero is a product, that combines innovation, top quality design, simplicity, functionality and strikingly contrasting shapes and materials. Each kitchen from Snaidero is the outcome of in-depth research, which includes socio-cultural trends, product ergonomics and functionality, as well as specific research into new applications for human well being in the kitchen. – Thanks Sara Pittino for the suggestion.

It’s tough to spend on “high-end” or “luxury” kitchen renovations in an economic downturn. Compared to a complete overhaul, a more affordable option is to update your kitchen by installing a backsplash of stylish and eclectic glass tiles. Not only will a homeowner save a significant amount of money, a glass tile backsplash will completely transform the look and value of your kitchen. Before the renovation, this kitchen was lackluster, dim, and the worn-out backsplash blended in with the cabinets making the kitchen seem a lot smaller than it was. The backsplash was just a painted dry wall which proved hard to clean from grease and food.

Wanting a sophisticated, modern and affordable new look, the owner consulted with interior designer Eli Mechlovitz, founder of GlassTileStore.com. Mechlovitz suggested that the owner install some high-end, bright, lightly-toned glass tiles as a backsplash; the right combination would brighten up the kitchen. They choose the Super White Frosted blend from GlassTileStore.com, which provided simple clean lines to contrast against the dark cabinetry. When the project was completed, the white glass tiles opened up the kitchen design to more natural light, created a textural background, and added more dimensions – which made the space seem larger and more luxurious. The use of narrow, smaller tiles and a brick pattern generated visual energy for the eye.
