Reinventing Nature Escapes: Another Picnic Table

Wouter Nieuwendijk and Jair Straschnow came up with an original way to celebrate a nature gathering. Their design collaboration resulted in ‘Another Picnic Table’, a project that brings together comfort and functionality. According to the designers, “this new variation of the iconic picnic table is trying to tackle two issues: splitting the bench into separate seats results in easier access, but also offers another option- a more relaxed low seating position. While there are numerous benches for public space, easy chairs are never to be found in parks and leisure areas, where one would expect.” Made of bamboo, the table has a natural appearance and could fit perfectly in any environment. Have a look at the photos below in order to understand what it offers and give us your opinion below.

I think this is a wonderful innnovation of the iconic picnic table – clever people! and and I would want to carry one of those in my tiny tumbleweed house (under the guest bed) – It does fold up I suppose?

very cool looking & very practical, but that bottom seat to leg connection will never last … rail or leg will split.

PS … looks like Ipe/ Brazilian Teak/ Palope — very strong, very heavy (sinks in water), very hard …. shatters/ splits easily.

This is a great design for the picnic table. I like that people can come and go from it more easily. I would definitely get this for my backyard. I agree with Paul on the design flaw though. That seat needs another support.

you´re right, paul. i like the concept, though. it deserves a redesign with other materials than rare wood+so much metal. it´s nice for a big family garden, not for a public place, i think.
anyway, the design is ok for a school project.

Great idea for multiple groups to sit at the same table. Very innovative.

rare wood?! owww my god, have you people read the post?! It is made out of bamboo, the fastest plant growing on earth, so very probably bamboo ply. I’m pretty sure the seat stands with no problems.

Good pick up, LEO … missed the bamboo part … never seen bamboo that looks like that or is 1″ + thick as pic suggests.
After years of making furniture, I can tell you that the bottom joint is a design flaw that would never last. Be tht as it may, it is a wonderfully creative design … like it alot.
