NICK: My girlfriend and I have just moved in to a new apartment but we have been struggling with the right colors to pick for the living room. As you can see in the picture, we currently have light blue couches and a dark brown papasan chair. Most of our furniture is black or dark brown. We are mainly looking for advice on what color to paint the walls but would also love to hear any ideas for rugs/blinds/lamps/anything else that would look good in this space. We appreciate any thoughts or comments you may have!

EDITOR: What color suggestions do you have for Nick? He also needs help with decor options, please leave your comments for him!

Personally I would get rid of that big brown chair, it’s wasting so much space and isn’t so pretty. But if they won’t part with it, I would get a new cover for it. Something patterned that would incorporate turquoise, chocolate and orange.. I would do one wall a dark orange color (the TV wall) and the rest a light turquoise. Try to get throw pillows with the same fabric and use on the other 2 sofas. The shelf under the TV is too small. If you are going to do a shelf, go much longer with it and use one above the TV as well. Large artwork above the main sofa. Floor lamp in the corner between the 2 sofas. If they get rid of that brown chair, I would go with a big square fabric coffee table ottoman and replace the table. That would help to cover the floor since there is no area rug. Good luck!!

Paint walls with white colour, and get brighter wooden floor, or some basic bright plastic mats. Laminate? Some hidden floor lights close to the walls or somewhere. Like this: http://www.rakennusfaktahaku.fi/14/product/55/32/22/laminaatti.jpg

A white divan sofa. Get rid off the second sofa and that ugly easy chair. More space to window, and your room.

Some nice modern floor light (Ikea kind of) to the corner. Colourful details such as plants, pillows and felts. Hide that stuff under your TV for example getting a low TV level (white as TV is black, big and that way dominant). New coffee table etc.

Try changing the order. TV to another side, and sofa etc.

The room is dull and should be lit with spot lighting. The walls are bare, try some bright colored paintings or wall hangings. The floor is very dull, try covering it with a bright colored rug. Basically add some color to it…

Unlike the others I think you have a great start, Nick.Great furniture. The sofas look new. Love Papasan chair. Their colors go very well together and there’s a good chance you can find an area rug and/or windows treatments that will bring the two colors together. Throw in a some brown pillows on the sofa and you’ve got a balanced living space.
Here’s a few recommendations I found for you. (I’ve no affiliation, just love shopping here for their quality and easy return policy. Plus right now they have $4.99 shipping! Check promo code linked from their home page.)
Standard Squares WTs. Color: Light Jadestone.
Martini Grommet WTs – more than one color choice here that would work.
I found both the above HERE.
McKenzie Washable Rug The brown is a possibility.
As for throw pillows, you can either check your local stores or buy an extra window panel and make slipcovers for the pillows you already have.
Whatever you do I know you’ll enjoy your new home.

Oh forgot to add some art on the walls would be great. I’m sure you already knew that so my suggestion would be to make your own art. Grab your digital camera and head to your favorite places and start shooting. Lay on the ground and take photos of each other or trees, building anything that that laying on the ground would give a unique view of. Set the camera on the ground and take photos of a neat street, park or other favorite place. Use the macro to get up and personal with nature. Your favorites of you shoot can be enlarged just about anywhere anymore. Wal Mart, Walgreens Kinko’s or other print shop if you don’t want to wait. They can also change the colors to black and white, sepia and all sorts of other effects that will make even a not so great photo shine.
I do hope you share photos of the finished room too. I’m new here so I have no idea how this site works yet, but I’m loving it so far.
    Good luck!

I’d suggest replacing the papasan chair with a smaller armchair or ottoman. Introducing a bright, warm color (lemon yellow, poppy red, or orange) will liven things up. A couple of pillows and a rug will give you a mix of textures, patterns, and colors. I think a large piece of art over the sofa will help balance the television. Also, a floor lamp or pendant fixture will give you warm lighting and vertical interest.

As for the paint, I’d keep most of the walls light and neutral. Perhaps a slate blue a few shades lighter than your sofa. If you’re interested in more specific selections, visit our website and drop me an email. We’d love to help you finish your room!

@Christine,I agree the big brown nest chair is not a good addition to the room.

Nice start! You’ve got great basics. Pier One presently has Papasan Chair cushions on sale and they have new colors and designs. I think the cushions are about $60 each but at least you can get them. Still, I think what you have is ok. I would rearrange the room. Reason- I would put the Papasan by the window and the heat vent/door. But the love seat dow not go well where the chair is. I’m not sure I would have wall-mounted the tv. There are units available wall-like. But I digress.

You’re biggest issue, IMVHO, is lack of accessories. A RUG! If not curtains, then sheers, but curtains (to just below the sill because of the heating vent) will add color and punch. Throw pillows. Wall hangings- either art work, hang a rug, a quilt, a tapestry or wall hanging. Lots of options. I personally think your coffee table is far too blah and you need one which has more character.

I think your furniture arrangement is fine, but accessorizing and warming it up will make it look far more comfortable. Good luck!

Nick if you guys are renting then you may want to do some low budget changes for now….
    Walls
TV wall nice light color that doesnt compete with the television it is your focus. Wall opposite tV accent color this wall – bright color of your choice..
window wall leave as is possibly pull the color from behind the couch around on the base of the other walls.
Floor – not the best but an area rug will add a nice touch and detract from the floor….
Ceiling- you can also paint it the same color as the wall behind the couch – (not a dark color it will make the space feel tight)

Wall art on the couch wall and some select pieces on the wall with the tv should liven up the space

remember before you commit to colors it may be worth it to get a quart and put it on the surfaces to see how the light in the space renders the wall colors…. hoe this helps

I agree that the round chair should switch place with the smaller sofa if the front part of the room allows it. That way the room would be more focused to the window. The colour of the round chair should definitely be changed. If you have dark funiture I’d suggest white walls and the two sofas in beige. The round chair could be yellow-orange to add energy to the room. Other strong colors would also work well (as bordeaux, orange-red … ). To add other details of similar color (like pillows, vase, picture frame, ..) and two wall fixtures above the bigger sofa.

I would recommend to paint the walls in bright yellow colors, I like the way you have set up a furniture but we still need to add a few finishing touches like some brighter pillows with blue, yellow, green and white pattern, I would put a palm tree in a right corner next to window, or a very tall vase, for windows i recommend ikea panels, its simple to install they have nice colors, clean your coffee table put tray or round plate with few candels in brown gren an yellow i don’t think is necessary to have a rug, after you done with it call your friends for some movie time im sure they will love your new cozy place Good luck :)

I also think you have a nice start here Nick, and you can easily leave the room like this and not go crazy with a paint brush just yet :)

When it comes do re-decorating a space like this it is all about what you and your girlfiend like. What i mean is that this space can be re-painted, re-modeled, re-aranged in dozens of ways, and im sure that everyone who has writen a reply to this post has a totaly different picture in their head of what the finished room should look like. It is all about YOU.

If you both love color, then go crazy with a bold color on a excent wall (lets say the one behing the sofa), put up some colorfull pictures, change the cushion on the Papasan chair into something more colorfull. If you like more calm, earthy tones, then use those colors on the walls, blinds and pillows. If you like a minimalist look, then get rid of the Papasan chair, paint the walls white and add just a few fraimed pictures on the wall behind the sofa.

I think you see where im going with this. You and your girlfriend should browse the net or look through some magazines and see what kind of things you both like and go from there. And if you still need some help, post some more info on your likes and dislikes and im sure we will figure something out :)

First, a light and lovely periwinkle blue fused over with a glazing of light asparagus green for the walls would bring light and whimsy to the rooms view and high ceilings. Wildflowers and lots of plant life soften the hard edges of the room. High backed, deep built ins supplied with overstuffed pillows will create the seating along the length of the right wall coming to a 45 degree angle in front of the window like an extended window seat. A pair of brown leather chaise loungers are placed at the forefront of the room for more comfort and verve with a well placed accent table in silver between them. Oval glass table top will rest on a single silver painted out, oversized planter flipped upside down, used as a coffee table for books and colored artifacts of a more personal nature including small tea lights resting on a dinner charger or platter in light blues, greens and yellows. The walls should be donned with a huge painting of a more personal nature over the sofa seating with wrought iron scrolls on either side of the painting. The opposite wall where the flat screen is located should be set into a shallow built in with several lengthy shelving areas along its sides for sparsely arranged books, small plants, photos and gadgets favorable to the home owner for a personal touch. Not too much on the shelving. Keep it clean without getting junky. Viola! Perfection,,, Email me… I’ll be glad to assist you. I have an ever growing portfolio of creations.

Hey, u have to change that awful light in room, new curtains – is what u need. Than, paint with new colour – all walls or only TVwall. I suggest lila, green or orange, but that is important – when is too much light in room, better to use cool colours.
And rug, you have to have rug!. And flowers, that has to do your girlfriend
