Pay & Site Private Park Bench by Fabian Brunsing

Designer Fabian Brunsing has created a new type of park bench called PAY & SIT Private Park Bench. As you will see in the video below, the Pay & Sit park bench features built in spikes, when you insert a half a Euro coin, the spikes retract and you are able to sit on the bench. An alarm goes off a few seconds before your time is up, giving you a few precious seconds to rise before the spikes pop back up. I’d like know what you think about this idea, stupid or not ?

VERY stupid idea. I mean, God, now you even have to pay to sit?!?! Why doesn’t someone invent the ‘PAY&BREATH’ machine?

what if this guy wore headphones or was deaf or blind? Interesting idea but a park bench should offer to any stranger rest and comfort. as a piece of art-installation it’s good but the intention of use is bad, hostile and selfish.

Really… designer, I don’t think so? This is something some stupid government bureaucrat would think of. This stupid idea seems to be making the rounds of the design websites. Quit giving it air play.

    Stupid – yes.
Didn’t look like the spikes retracted completely.
I dislike paying for toll roads… no way I’m paying to sit on a bench.

Well, yes, it’s a stupid idea to pay for sitting, but in some countries, like Hungary, where all the benches smell from homless ppl it’s not SO stupid… unfortunately :( All in all, I still prefer carrying my own chair/blanket to the park.

This designer should be banned from any and all future work, what a disgrace. I call a boycott on anything current or future work he does, just shows how selfish and twisted this world is and what it shouldn’t be. As designers we should be moving in the opposite direction of this. Anyone?

Total stupid application. What the bench are for then? The designer his self should be used to sit on spike chair and sleep on nail bed.

Dumb. People shouldn’t have to pay to sit in public areas. Even if this idea were translated into reality, a spike re-emerging is a bad idea (alarm warning or not). Why would it even be a spike? Why not a gently rounded hump? Dumb idea.

Thats the most retarded idea ever; ignoring that the spikes dont retract fully and your arse isnt made of wood so would sink on to them in the holes anyway. The elderly, deaf, infirm would be reduced to sitting on the floor to avoid being turned into a kebab.

In Idea to deter the homeless sleeping on the benches? christ even the homeless need to sleep, where exactly does this guy want them to go? Dumpsters?

Pay for your own retirement bench…

Buy one and make a plaque “Donated by XXXXX – In loving hope of retirement”. People then pay to use it – then you get yourself a free bench to sit on in your retirement :D

Seems like some sort of performance art or social commentary thing, not a serious concept for a bench. But all you have to do is find a piece of plywood and mash it down over the spikes. Free all-day sitting! (Sarcasm intended to point out that design intended to penalize bad behavior will always be defeated, but design that rewards the intended behavior will be welcomed.)

Everyone is focusing on the principle of charging for using this dumb contraption. My question is how much of the cost is to recover the cost of the bench on its own, and how much for the charging mechanism. The latter is likely to push the cost of this way higher than the cost of a public bench. Also this will be open to vandalism and theft. If it fails, it becomes unusable meaning that nobody can use it. How did this prototype make it this far without consulting and understanding potential users of it. The idea of spikes is a crazy one. If this ever gets to make it into public spaces, it will be open to vandalism, theft and quite likely a law suit or 2, for example if a cyclist or jogger was to fall onto it with spikes out. This has got to be one of the worst thought out ideas of the year.

  2. [...] Pay & Site Private Park Bench by Fabian Brunsing Shockingly misanthropic public space design here, but easily circumvented, surely? I mean, it's inconvenient for the general public to carry large boards around to place on top of the spikes, but if you spent a lot of time sleeping on benches (as this is presumably meant to deter) it wouldn't be too difficult. Perhaps the market will come up with its own solution, the PortaBoard. To be seen on Dragon's Den soon. [...]
