		<description>This kind of floor treatment presents a greater problem than rotting, which is this:  The wood continues to absorb and lose moisture seasonally.  If it is too tightly packed in, when it absorbs moisture the centers will crown up, so that the result is a series of small mounds.  The outward pressure of wood swelling can be quite powerful.  It can bend steel and break masonry.

So if you are going to attempt something like this very attractive floor treatment, make sure you leave enough slop for the wood to move.

That being said, there are quite a few rot-resistant species of tree (cedar, locust, douglas fir) that one could use, obviating the need to treat for rot.

		<description>I agree, the end grain of wood is prone to rotting quickly, hence we place our homes on cement preventing moisture to get to it. Rotting wood makes unsure footing and will have to replace these &quot;wood tiles&quot; regularly. www.illanajoffrey.com would know something about end grain wood</description>
