kitchen renovations using white glass tiles

Share |

It’s tough to spend on “high-end” or “luxury” kitchen renovations in an economic downturn. Compared to a complete overhaul, a more affordable option is to update your kitchen by installing a backsplash of stylish and eclectic glass tiles. Not only will a homeowner save a significant amount of money, a glass tile backsplash will completely transform the look and value of your kitchen. Before the renovation, this kitchen was lackluster, dim, and the worn-out backsplash blended in with the cabinets making the kitchen seem a lot smaller than it was. The backsplash was just a painted dry wall which proved hard to clean from grease and food.

Wanting a sophisticated, modern and affordable new look, the owner consulted with interior designer Eli Mechlovitz, founder of GlassTileStore.com. Mechlovitz suggested that the owner install some high-end, bright, lightly-toned glass tiles as a backsplash; the right combination would brighten up the kitchen. They choose the Super White Frosted blend from GlassTileStore.com, which provided simple clean lines to contrast against the dark cabinetry. When the project was completed, the white glass tiles opened up the kitchen design to more natural light, created a textural background, and added more dimensions – which made the space seem larger and more luxurious. The use of narrow, smaller tiles and a brick pattern generated visual energy for the eye.

5 elegant ways to add warmth to your home

Share |

The modern trend when it comes to building homes and designing interiors is to opt for a futuristic, spade age-styled minimalist look that borrows from plenty of whites, grays and blacks. The look is often robotic resulting in homes that are great to look at and visit, but bland and lifeless to live in. It’s like your home lacks a personality and face of its own.

warm house interior 5 elegant ways to add warmth to your homeWithout that unique identity, that personal touch and the exclusive warmth that makes you feel that you belong here; it is really hard to call it your ‘own’. Adding warmth to a place is not as difficult though as many make it out to be.

These simple steps will help you turn the stylish house into your comfortable home!

Add a fireplace to create a more ambient atmosphere

Instead of opting for the modern fireplaces that use plastic materials and a combustible gas for fuel, go traditional with your fireplace mantle. This gives the home a personal look and a timeless charm. A wooden fireplace mantle is a classic that turns out to be a winner on every occasion. But in case your home uses plenty of glass, then a stone mantle styled elegantly is also an excellent choice. This instantly adds warmth to your home in more than just one way, you know …

Pick vibrant colors, shades and textures

Instead of sticking to what is on offer go with the warmer shades like variations of red, orange and yellow. Also if you love the blue sky, the gentle green or even the cute pink, then go for it. Of course, make sure that this is a gentle transformation and not a glaring oddity. Then you can change the textures by choosing patterns that are bold, yet acceptable. This will add immensely to the coziness of your home and it will also give you an excellent opportunity to get creative.

A great book collection, wonderful arrangement of candles or an excellent sue of indoor potted plants and shrubs instantly makes the place a lot friendlier and warm. You can always improvise on this by adding stuff that you like, making your own collection of items and adding more life to the walls. Wicker baskets that hold stuff are also a favorite among people when it comes to creating an affectionate atmosphere.

Use of personal items, collectibles and photographs

There is obviously nothing that offers a home its unique flavor like personal items beautifully arranged. You still have those special photographs that share your great times with your guests? They do bring back some wonderful memories. Both items also tend to become great conversation pieces and if you happen to have a rare or exclusive collectible, then that only adds to the fun.

Rule of thumb: materials such as velvet and wool always help make your home a lot cozier and give it a very warm look. Using a retro-styled lamp shade, curtains made out of Felicia or Terracotta and you’re only adding to the affect. Just mix and match them wisely with the existing interiors and they are sure to work their magic.

No matter how great your home looks, it is important to give it that snuggly and inviting look to ensure that both you and those who visit you once in a while are comfortable and do not feel out of place. It is not a difficult task and once you get started, you will find new ways of making the four walls around you become a natural extension of your thoughts, feelings and emotions!

Smart toilet system that uses shower water for flushing

Share |

The Grey Water Toilet System by Alison Norcott is a smart toilet system minimizes water wastage by allowing shower water to be utilized for flushing. When you shower drain water is collected and pumped into an in-wall tank, and when needed the toilet uses the in-wall tank of used shower water to clean the toilet. To avoid bacteria growth, the tank is discharged on a cyclic basis so that water isn’t stored for over twenty four hours. As an added safety precaution, the water is treated minimally via low powered ultrasonic irradiation. – Via + Source

Indoor Waterfalls and Fountains

Share |

When people think of cascading waterfalls, they often have images of rain forests. When they think of fountain displays, they will think of unique spurting ponds found as décor in urban environments. Yet, there are other formats in which a water display can be presented. One very popular method is with an indoor fountain.

indoor waterfall2 Indoor Waterfalls and FountainsYes, there is such a thing as an indoor fountain that can be installed in one’s home! And, no, they are not at all complex or difficult to be installed.

Adding an indoor fountain to your home has a host of benefits. It can make an interior look modern, hip, and upbeat. The utilization of an indoor water display is often overlooked by many. This is why including such an item in the home can work wonders for making an interior look special. And if you are redesigning an interior, you are going to want it to be something special. An indoor fountain or waterfall display can work tremendously well in terms of delivering such a look.

indoor waterfall Indoor Waterfalls and FountainsThere are a number of ways you can install a fountain in your home. There are “pre-fabricated” fountain kits that can be assembled quite easily. They can also be mounted on a wall with little or no effort. Since there are a number of these types of kits on the market, any size or budget can be accommodated. So, no matter how much you are able to spend or what the dimensions of your residence may be, you can still have a fountain installed.

Then, there is also the option of having a custom fountain built for your residence. Obviously, this would be more expensive than a fountain kit. However, if you have a budget that can afford it, you should explore your options. There are many professionals that can design an elaborate and breathtaking indoor fountain for your home or office. And, yes, the visual impact it provides can be stunning.

Now, some may have worries that the presence of a waterfall or fountain in the interior of their home will come with numbers of problems. Namely, they may be worried that the fountain will lead to water spilling (or, worse, flooding) on to the floor. While such a concern is understandable, it is also unwarranted. Indoor fountains are not designed flippantly or haphazardly. Designers go to great lengths to make sure water damage does not occur. So, there is no need to fear such problems.
