Idea for underground parking in an urban environment

For those of you who always dreamed at your very own top-secret underground parking, like those you saw in movies here is an innovative design that aims to tackle the growing loss of front gardens to car park space in urban areas. A West London resident decided to combine the garden an the parking space together, and he has developed a unique design to deal with the loss of front garden areas to car parking space in urban environments. The final result is very practical and it shows how a beautiful garden and parking space can be combined to help maintain the aesthetic appearance of a street. Found via – 1, 2

    It is a real idea. There is one in my neighbourhood. The only people who could possibly afford this are the people who own the type of car you can only feel safe hiding underground :P

    I always thought you could do something similar with a bed. Except when you get up in the morning you you would just raise it up into the ceiling.

    I guess a practical use could be if you had a lot of cars in an underground parking garage, thus allowing you to drive in with one, but drive out with another. Once again, only good for the rich.

    In the summer of 2001, I was in Paris, where i saw near a side
    street, what looked like a one car garage, made out of glass.
    a car drove in, the driver got out, leaving the car alone inside.

    then the driver went to an atm-like machine and did some stuff.

    the floor that the car was parked on turned out to be a platform,
    which lowered, then got whisked away.

    It’s been many years since then, so now these garages have popped
    up in places like Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY. the link (my name) is
    to a company that makes automated garages. I could imagine parking
    a car in a driveway like in the photo above on this page, but then
    the car would get stored in a large central garage, maybe for the
    entire neighborhood, or on a smaller scale, maybe a robotic parking
    system for the home would store a few vehicles, under the driveway.

    They have these in Japan – even on a large scale. You drive
    into this elevator like thing which is actually a ferris wheel of
    cars. You then punch a number to get your car back.

    For homes and apartments, they are usually two or three tier. The
    elevator works exactly in the way you show it and again, you put
    in a key or punch a number to get your car.

    This is awesome – There is so much avoidance to the dangers
    you guys talk about. Say it has sensors just like garage doors
    that know if someone is between it closing, or if someone were to
    get locked down there a button could easily bring them up or
    possibly a door that leads to the house. It has the same chance
    of opening just as anyones garage door.

    I like it.

    okay folks couple of problems here , first what if your car doesn’t
    fit all the way wont the pretuding edges of a poorly parked car
    get crushed when it closes , and i agree with the power failures
    or hydrualic failures people could be trapped unless there is a
    service hatch or short tunnel leading into the side other wise a
    great idea hope to see it being used for proper applications

    the cost? probably in between $150k to $250k depending on where
    you are, and how much the people around will charge, as to the
    tapped and killed, i think it goes without saying there is a way
    out at the bottom, i mean come on think for a second. Also if you
    notice the car has room, im sure if you parked in facing the house y
    you could get it in there nicely. over all great idea, i want one,
    i need $1.5mill to buy a house, the car and then the contraption.

    Would it be cheaper if it was a ramp rather than lift and then then
    the garden could roll over once the car was in? I mean i know it
    would be expensive but its a idea for new builds!

    Not a new idea in any way, similar ideas have been around for 10+years..

    It is a good idea, unless there is any chance of even a small flood in your area. In which case your car would be ruined straight away.

    What if someone is lounging or walking on top when someone decides to raise it ? And what’s to keep someone from parking on top when it’s down? Nothing that can’t be overcome with good planning I suppose.

    Um, they have tons of car elevators in Asia. I routinely park my car
    in a basement that you go down into via elevator. This is simply a
    different take on an existing concept.

    There are also parking towers that are really huge ferris-wheel-like
    racks of cars within buildings and elevated parking in which a
    few spaces are rotated so cars can be “stacked” above one another.

    This is not “impossible”. In fact it already exists.
    As for flood danger? People park in basement levels all the time in
    cities. Generally cars are not destroyed.

    Flooding isn’t so much of a problem, it could be made reasonably
    water-tight and a drain in the bottom would handle any water that
    leaked in. In the case of an actual flood, the 6 extra feet deep
    wouldn’t make much difference.

    It needs to be considerably bigger, we expect our parking solutions
    to work for many years, who’s to say the next car won’t be a
    F-350 crew-cab dually 4×4?

    I’ve seen this done with a guy who has a lambo collection. He had about
    ten cars and needed spots for them, so he had lifts like this.

    In NYC in some of the parking garages, they have this except it is
    all above ground (well in the basement actually), and you drive one
    car up and then there is two spots instead of one. they have some
    that go a lot higher too.

    it’s very expensive to build, consumes a lot of electricity,
    and in fact, doesn’t save any space, it might also be
    a big problem:
    1) when there’s a power faillure
    2) if you didn’t pay your bill
    3) there’s heavy rain, and the extraction of water is not enough,
    (and the car is not a submarine, as James Bond’s)

    what are you building next a GIANT LASER in the roof of the house?

    Stop picking holes in it – I think it’s a very clever design. If any of thosse things happen, it will not be your problem and therefore you do not need to feel obliged to point them out.

    GREAT against thieves I’d say. Better that any car alarm.
    I believe that if properly built and with an alternative (locked) system of lifting the car besides power, it can be top notch.
