Designed by Jethro Macey the Coin Lamp requires you to insert a coin before it lights up. It will only light up whenever you insert coins inside, and the lamp itself has been specially set to a pre-determined time by an internal mechanism. Coin Lamp is the first product in a range based on the concept of values and reward, it subtly heightens awareness of consumption through design. According to Macey’s website, Coin Lamp will be available to the public soon. To express your interest, sign up to Macey’s newsletter. – Via

I’m a green fan, and when I say that it means that I care about the environment and I try to do as little harm as I can. Seeing this new penthouse in Lower Manhattan, downtown New York, I realized that I can do more. I can have my own green spot right in my newly renovated apartment.

But back to our 3,100 sq-ft penthouse in New York, which is owned by Matthew Blesso, 35, a real estate developer. The guy managed to turn it into something that “has life”, with the help of two Yale professors, the architect Joel Sanders and the landscape architect Diana Balmori. The investment was close to $1 million but bringing nature into your apartment is not cheap.

What I love the most about it is the stunning rooftop garden with an outdoor shower (how cool is this?), the drip irrigation system, the walnut table, the way they mixed plants and wood (walls, floors, etc). I simply love what they did with the vertical bathroom wall that has peace lily, peperomia and prayer plants in it. It’s like I can smell harmony … don’t you? -via ApartmentTherapy

Creative Wedge is a concept design that deserves to make it in to showrooms and into our homes. The fully customizable collection of foam wedges, rectangles and squares allows users to put together whole sections of furniture in all sorts of configurations. These will suit every conceivable position from sitting to prone for maximum comfort.

Bright Side Design actually dreamed up this concept for the office but really, it is also ideally suited for the home as they said, the different positions will create ”a space to think, talk, rest, create, eat, meet…or just have a cup of tea while you unwind for a few minutes.” Bliss.

Drama, lights, action!! Ricardo Garza Marco’s Cube Lamp or Lámpara Cubo sets the stage for dramatic lighting. Imagine your next party with these lamps aligned on the walls of your living space. The lamps themselves are starkly simple but they let out light from slits on all the sides. When arranged as a set, the emitted light casts wonderful geometric rays around the lamps.

Users can choose whatever patter they want by moving the lamp inside. The cube lamp is available in different wood finishes and color. For those who hanker for pure contemporary looks, there is also an aluminum composite or alucobond. Check out the designer’s website for more information.

The largest conference and expo on green innovation, West Coast Green, just started off yesterday and we already have the scoop with a great house dedicated to those who really care about the envinronment (I’m one of them, you?). It’s the SG Blocks Container House designed by the Lawrence Group that was built up usng five recycled shipping containers, uses solar power and can recycle rainwater.

Other than all these it also uses an Agilewaves resource monitoring system which is a web-based application that actively monitors real-time electric, gas and water usage and then calculates the carbon footprint. But the SG Blocks container house is not only highly sustainable but can also withstand hurricanes in Florida and earthquakes in California, thanks to its durable steel envelope. Just for the record … it took them 1 month to do the prefab and only 4 hours and 47 minutes to install it at the expo. – via Inhabitat
