The largest conference and expo on green innovation, West Coast Green, just started off yesterday and we already have the scoop with a great house dedicated to those who really care about the envinronment (I’m one of them, you?). It’s the SG Blocks Container House designed by the Lawrence Group that was built up usng five recycled shipping containers, uses solar power and can recycle rainwater.

Other than all these it also uses an Agilewaves resource monitoring system which is a web-based application that actively monitors real-time electric, gas and water usage and then calculates the carbon footprint. But the SG Blocks container house is not only highly sustainable but can also withstand hurricanes in Florida and earthquakes in California, thanks to its durable steel envelope. Just for the record … it took them 1 month to do the prefab and only 4 hours and 47 minutes to install it at the expo. – via Inhabitat

Hey! I really LOVE this site, man! I’m from Brazil and always be here! This is a NICE site and I love EVERYTHING that you post here! Nice job!!!
stylistically this house really reminds me of wee prefab houses.
What a house !!
I think the one you have pictured is really ugly, but these could easily be very nice homes.
I love this house. This is such a neat idea and I bet the building costs are really cut down.
This is a question which perhaps qualifies as a technical question?
What is the biggest single obsticle concerning the container construction concept?
ie: foundation? Stackability? Zoning restrictions? connecting prefabricated componets?
Etc?
I live in California, earthquake country so for me, the fact that these houses can easily be “Green Certified” and can withstand fire, hurricane, flood and earthquakes is more important that the criticism that they are “ugly.” Beauy is in the mind of the beholder. Plus, they are really affordable. What’s not to like?
Any thought of how well on such containers assembled house would stand when earth quake hit such as Haiti Quake?
Building with containers is worth taking a look at if you are contemplating a new home.
Good resource is the Residential Shipping Container Primer website. A DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) REFERENCE AND FOR CONVERTING RECYCLED INTERMODAL CARGO SHIPPING CONTAINERS INTO BUILDINGS AND ARCHITECTURE.
Lots of example buildings, details, facts, and links to other articles. They have something new that you can setup your own project wiki to get help with your project if you are the design build sort…
In France, in the North, a company is also expanding into the production of container houses.
That is House-Up (http://house-up.com/).
It’s hard to find knowledgeable people on this subject, but you sound like you recognize what you’re speaking about! Thanks
