Rooftop Gardens in New York City

Today while I was surfing on Flickr I’ve found a set of pictures by an user called Jwilly’s entitled “Rich People Rooftops NYC”. The collection of pictures shows us rooftop gardens over the penthouses of New York, but is also a good example of what happends when you live in a big city. Not enough green so you make up for it by having potted plants all over the place. These little small places full of plants look great but I still preffer a real backyard. You can see more & bigger images with rooftop gardens from New York, by visiting Jwilly’s photo stream on Flickr.

I love the pics. I am moving into a new penthouse apartment.
I would like to have a roof top garden like the one I see here.
But I have a question that I hope someone here can answer.
After you plant trees and srubs etc. in the containers, can you
leave them outside all year long even in winter? I hope to hear
from someone with info about this question.

    Thanks

    This is for Lana,

I have had an extensive roof top garden in NYC,
Some plants will survive the frost some will not.
be prepared. The rootballs can be frozen solid, yet many come back.
I had great success with some beautiful Japanese Maples.

    Thanks,
    Paul
