Changing Building Facade acts Like Pixels formed by Natural Light

When you are looking at these pictures this might look like a modern piece of architecture, but after you’ll see the video attached below you’ll see that Flare is more than that. Flare is a modular, computer-driven system that creates a moving skin for the facade of a building and it was created by Christopher Bauder and Christian Perstl. The Flare units are made up of computer controlled metal flake bodies which are by supplemented pneumatic cylinders. A great futuristic outer shell for any building. Because of the shape and size of each unit it can be placed on any designed building.

Each metal flake reflects the bright sky or sunlight when in vertical standby position. When the flake is tilted downwards by a computer controlled pneumatic piston, its face is shaded from the sky light and this way appears as a dark pixel. By reflecting ambient or direct sunlight, the individual flakes of the FLARE system act like pixels formed by natural light.

And now after you have an idea of how this system works, and you saw some pictures here is the most interesting part of this post, a video clip that shows the different patterns that are created based on how the tilting flakes reflect natural light.

Beam Bed – Sun-Rays-Like Light Effect

The Beam Bed was designed by Ewan Robertson for Lagostudio. An original system of boards forms the base for the mattress, opening up in a sunburst arrangement from a central fulcrum. The way of supporting the mattress is therefore innovative and unorthodox, but decidedly functional and practical. Inspired by a figure of elementary simplicity and beauty, the sun, it generates brilliant illuminating effect. The source of light at the base irradiates beams of light like a sunburst through the sun-rays-like opening resulting in a seductive light-shadow. The final effect looks good, and someway it makes me things at an alien spacecraft …but at least the lack of odd shadows would reassure you that there were no monsters under the bed! – Via

Chair made from Sponges by Marcella Foschi

The designer Marcella Foschi participated in the workshop of the Campana brothers in Milan sponsored by 3M and developed this chair made from sponges. The final design is not such a big deal, and I’m pretty sure that a lot of people could make something like this, but …it has something interesting, and I can imagine a lot of creative products for home based on this simple idea. – Via

“No Screw,No Glue” Stainless Steel Cabinets by Joost van Bleiswijk

The cabinets made by Dutch born designer, Joost van Bleiswijk is the antithesis of the flatpack furniture for they are not screwed or glued together. His collection of No Screw, No Glue cabinets as well as other items such as a serving tray, candelabra, lantern and even a trophy are all made of stainless steel. The high sheen of the furniture comes from the all polished stainless steel construction. His magnificently large (and heavy) wall cabinet functions not only as a storage unit but also a fireplace and altar. Although it is a contemporary style, van Bleiswijk pays homage to centuries of past cabinet designs.

Each of his designs is typically constructed from over a hundred different elements. His other cabinet which he cheerfully calls “Big and Heavy” for example is made up of 142 parts. He has been concentrating on his No Screw, No Glue collection for four years and says the designs are becoming more complicated and architectural with time. His furniture is not only sleek but durable. Stains are not an issue as the metal is not porous and neither will it rust. However, transportation and installation of such large weighty pieces might be just a little tricky. Via
