Damask Staircase Makeover

Staircases are often neglected in homes. After all they have a utilitarian function – a passageway to go from one floor to another. Yet, they deserve more visual impact. As Melissa from Sugar City Journal wrote, it’s all about “elevating the mundane“. She was inspired by an older interior decorating book by Alexandra Stoddard which promoted the concept of taking the least inspiring and unattractive spot in your home and turning it into your favorite corner.

What she did was to scan a pretty fabric onto her computer and added personal touches to the picture with Photoshop. She printed the pattern on regular sized paper and glued them together. After laminating the paper, she glued them onto the risers of the stairs using Modgepodge. She says, “If you look closely when walking up these stairs, you might see a few familiar faces hidden amidst the damask. A simple way to bring a smile, as I walk up and down these stairs, one hundred times a day.” So simple, yet effective both visually and for the family budget! Via

Stupid Record : World’s Longest Sofa Record Broken

A few days ago I’ve read an article about how people spend thair lifes, and from that article I’ve came to the conclusion that we must be very careful on how we spend our time, because he never comes back. Just after I’ve finished that article I’ve found this interesting new record …the world’s longest sofa record has been broken on june 7th 2008. I don’t know why a record like this is even recognized. Anyway this title previously held by the danish now belongs to the norwegians. The sofa was constructed in perfect summer conditions in the town of sykkylven. measuring 61.52m in length, it consisted of 41 modules and 210 moulded foam cushions. In the end I don’t even know why some people bother with this kind of records ..but who knows maybe someone can show me the light. :)Via

Five Franklin Place by Unstudio

Five Franklin is a 20-story building designed by Ben van Berkel of Unstudio that will be located at 5 Franklin Place, between Broadway and Sixth in Tribeca. The building pays homage to TriBeCa’s iconic cast-iron aesthetic, with a facade constructed from reflective black metal bands of varying widths. This facade treatment offers privacy with maximum light and views within each residence. The metal bands twist like ribbons, wrapping Five Franklin Place with terraces and balconies, employing this decorative element as a functional tool. The interiors of the 55 residences are designed in three distinct apartment types: Loft Residences, City Residences and Sky Penthouses, each with their own distinct architectural features, colour palate and choice of materials. Potential buyers will need to shell out between $2 million and $16 million for one of the 55 residences, comprised of apartments, duplex lofts, or duplex townhouses. You can see more details about this project here. – Via

Untitled Chair by Alessandro Bêda

This chair is rather a cool concept proposed by the Portuguese designer Alessandro Bêda, we presented another interesting concept made by him a week ago ( Two-piece Flower Vase in the Shape of a Whale ). He called this chair “Untitled Chair“, and it seems that he’s not very good at coming up with names for his designs. I would like to name this chair “Perfect Shape” because design features 100 gas shock absorbers that enable the chair to adjust to pressure and change its shape to accommodate the person or object placed on it. The measurements of the chair are exactly the same of the LC2 Petit Comfort by Le Corbusier. Until now this chair is just a concept, but designer Alessandro Bêda told on his website that he’ll start  working on a prototype soon, though he ponders if his concept is really doable. – Via

Modular Carpet Tiles – Alexander Girard’s La Fonda del Sol Collection

Modular carpet tiles are the way to go for a beautiful yet customizable focal area for your living space. New from Flor.com are these drop dead gorgeous designs by Alexander Girard, the renowned textile designer. His La Fonda del Sol celebrates folk art designs like you’ve never seen before – whimsical sun shapes in must-have colours to warm up any neutral decor. The most useful feature of modular carpet tiles is the ability to add more than one set for total design flexibility. Mix and match from their different design offerings. There are three main colour selections – the Verde, Mandarina and Azul. If the larger designs aren’t your cup of tea, then try the smaller scale Pequeno which has nine sun graphics in one tile. Like the other tiles, the Pequeno tiles can be built up to cover larger surfaces.

All the tiles come as sets of six for an affordable $160 per set. The tiles are soft as the designs are printed on closely cropped velvet. They are thus easy to clean. A damp cloth will suffice for most surface spills but being modular means you can pick up any soiled tile for washing in the sink! So they are definitely suitable for kitchen or eating areas. Via
