The Bookcase Bed

After I’ve just presented this sofa bed, here is another interesting piece of multi functional furniture. A bookcase that transforms into a bed. A mattress stands upright in four bits and forms the bulk of the bookcase. These surround five storage shelves which are suspended in mid-air by a wall mounted frame. The mattress sections are placed on the floor and slot together to form the bed with two parts for a single, or all four to make a double. I’m sure that a lot of people who played tertis might smile when see this idea. The bookcase/bed combination works together to help maximize space and give your walls a little extra pop of color. In conclusion this idea looks awesome, and the only problem I see is the time you’ll need to make up your bed every morning. This concept is designed by Karen Babel is made for those who need a larger space in their small room.

i think getting that is a bad idea… when i go to my bedroom, i just want to jump on my bed not to fix it up every time.

  16. Wow that’s incredibly…stupid.

Minimal “bookcase” space – bascially, about the total space of a couple of milk crates – and a really narrow bed that has an uncomfortable jagged seam running down the middle of it. Assuming, of course, it doesn’t spread apart during the night leaving you on the floor.

Not to mention you’ve used up a whole wall to store forty or fifty books – and bought a pretty useless bed for what’s probably a couple of hundred dollars.

Just buy an inflatable and put it on the bottom shelf of a _real_ bookcase. The thing will cost less, be more comfortable, actually work as a bookcase, and not look totally stupid.

This IMHO is tacky. Get a Hide-a-bed and a bookshelf on wheels if you’re that desperate for space. That would look much nicer. The fact that I abhor that pea green color probably doesn’t help your cause either.

  21. Kimberley says:

Thats so funny. How do people come up with this stuff but like everyone else said… I think it might be uncomfy in the middle where it seperates. You might even fall through the crack every once in awhile.

  22. Dave says:

Not impressed. What happens when the mattress starts to sag? And, where do the sheets/bedding go, in the shelfs? What about a box-spring for support? I would imagine after a while of putting this up and down every day that the fabric will tear on the edges of the shelfs.

Artistic style gets a 4 out of 10
    Function gets a 1 out of 10

Demand would be far too low, and thus price would be far to high. Maintenance would be time consuming and costly.

  23. technology says:

This bed really sounds like something you would get at Ikea.

  24. TapeMan says:

    Creative? Yes.
    Practical? No.

First and foremost, in the bookcase form it really looks like a bunch of wasted space. Secondly, it’s not like anyone will be going back and fourth between the two settings unless they needed a guest bed; unless you’ve got a spare box spring sitting around, this things going right on the floor. Finally, unless you’ve got a good sheet to wrap around the mattress, theres a good chance you’ll either feel the seams or even separate the two during the night.

Yes, interesting idea to transform, something similar I have in my mind.

Just get a futon and have a full size bookcase, that “bookcase” is the equivalent of a single 1m long shelf!

  29. Great concept for small space. Great for studio apartments.

  32. Marcus says:

    umm.. no

  33. Steven says:

Haha that’s a great idea. Although I wonder if the middle of the bed where it joins together would be uncomfortable or not. Either way it’s a great idea for somebody who’s too limited on space for an extra bed. :)

  34. Joseph says:

This is one of the most ingeniously creative bed / bookcases I have ever seen, and I would love to purchase something like this for my VERY small apartment in NYC!

  35. Matt says:

Pretty slick. I like it. Do you feel the seams when you’re laying on it though?

  36. Dana says:

Nice bed. I would really enjoy having it for a small house. After I wake up I’ll go reading…
